Possible Signs of Abuse

CHILD PHYSICAL ABUSE
  • Unexplained burns, bites, bruises, broken bones or black eyes
  • Fading bruises or other marks noticeable after an absence from school
  • Frightened of parents and does not want to go home
  • Shrinks at approach of adults
  • Reports injury by a parent or other caregiver
  • Extreme watchfulness or vigilance
  • Bullying smaller children
  • Extreme fear of parents or caregiver

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
  • Has difficulty walking or sitting
  • Suddenly refuses to change for gym or to participate in physical activities
  • Reports nightmares or bedwetting
  • Experiences a sudden change in appetite
  • Demonstrates bizarre, sophisticated or unusual sexual knowledge or behavior
  • Becomes pregnant or contracts an STI
  • Runs away
  • Reports sexual abuse by a parent or other caregiver
  • Sexual knowledge beyond what is age appropriate
  • Recurring pain or itching in genital or anal areas
  • Frequent bladder or urinary tract infections
  • Unexplained regression or fear
  • Sexual acting out behavior
CHILD NEGLECT
  • Frequently absent from school
  • Begs or steals food or money
  • Lacks needed medical or dental care, immunizations or glasses
  • Consistently dirty and has severe body odor
  • Insufficient clothing for the weather
  • Abuses alcohol or other drugs
  • States that there is no one at home to provide care
  • Often hungry in the morning
  • Poor hygiene
  • Underweight, poor growth, failure to thrive

  • Extremes in behavior such as overly compliant or demanding, extreme passivity or aggression
  • Inappropriately adult or infantile
  • Delayed in physical or emotional development
  • Has attempted suicide
